Recap of Community Development Activities Meeting on Proposal for 62nd St Site (6111 Butler St)
On Tuesday, September 24, at 6:30 PM, Lawrenceville United and Lawrenceville Corporation hosted the Community Development Activities Meetings at Tree Pittsburgh (32 62nd St). The CDAM focused on the proposed plans from Golden East Investors (GEI) for the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh’s 62nd Street Site (6111 Butler St). This presentation was a chance to solicit initial community feedback ahead of a meeting between GEI and the URA Board on October 10th to determine if the two will enter into exclusive negotiations for the property.
The meeting opened with LU and LC giving introductions and explaining the ground rules of the meeting. They also shared the top community priorities expressed during the first meeting about the property back in February of 2024, which included:
- Make the site public lands for public good
- Make sure use is compatible with increasing riverfront access
- Have recreational uses be incorporated
- Create community spaces
- Promote environmental and health sustainability
- Compatibility with the site’s neighbor Tree Pittsburgh
- Increased safety for pedestrians and cyclists
LU and LC then passed the mic to Lilly Freedman, Manager of Development Projects at the URA, who shared a brief history of 62nd Street site since the URA’s acquistion of the property in 2008. Lilly then turned the presentation over to Jake Mansher with GEI to present their plans for the property. The plans include the development of two buildings for manufacturing, a community center, public green space, and a bike path.
Following the presentation, a Community Q&A was opened up, and attendees asked a variety of questions regarding storm water management, public space, greening plans, construction timeline, and more. LU, LC, the URA, and GEI answered the community’s questions and explained that they are early in the process, and there will continue to be opportunities for community feedback.
LU and LC greatly appreciate all the feedback provided and they will utilize it to advocate for the neighborhood’s interests as this project progresses. Community meetings will continue to be held if the URA and GEI enter into exclusive negotiations in October. LU and LC will be submitting a letter of community input to the URA by October 4th, so be sure to get your feedback in before that date so we can acurately reflect the community sentiment.
