/ / Beautification & Restoration

Lawrenceville United focuses on greening, beautification, and restoration to increase neighborhood engagement and civic pride.  We are the fiduciary agent for multiple greening agencies and plan to incorporate a green committee for all agencies to be a part of in order to provide guidance and input to developments and planning in the neighborhood.  The following programs are programs and projects in active in greening programs:

  • Love Your Block Awardee: Established by the Office of Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, Love Your Block is a partnership of Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and the Home Depot Foundation to beautify Pittsburgh – block by block.
  • Community Gardens: Lawrenceville is home to open-air community gardens that operate on a volunteer-based work cycle. The open-air mentality is “you eat what you reap” thus providing harvest to all who help in the garden.  In addition, there are individual plot gardens that allows residents to rent a private plot for their own gardening purposes.
    • Lawrenceville Organic Community Garden (LOCG): The LOCG currently manages the 2 open-air gardens in Lawrenceville.  One is in the cemetery off Stanton Avenue and the other is located on the corner of McCandless Avenue and Natrona Way in Upper Lawrenceville.  For more information on the gardens and work days visit their Facebook page.
    • Individual Plots: Currently there is one individual plot garden in Lawrenceville.  It is managed by a group of elected residents that also garden in the space.  For more information on the garden and rental fees, please email: lawrencevillecommunitygarden@gmail.com
  • Western PA Conservancy flower gardens:  Lawrenceville United stewards 2 flower garden plots; one at 48th and Butler and one in the 5700 block of Butler Street.  Both gardens are planted and maintained by volunteers in the community.  If you are interested in helping water the gardens during the summer, please contact Becky Thatcher.
  • Tree Planting:  Working with Tree Pittsburgh: Lawrenceville Tree Tenders, Lawrenceville United has supported numerous tree plantings throughout Lawrenceville.  The trees are provided through Western Pennsylvania Conservancy‘s TreeVitalize program.  Over 500 trees have been planted in Lawrenceville thus far.  Want to get a tree for your property?  Fill out the tree request form.
